(prf)... view less

'In this research project an area that includes 27 main canton-towns of four French departements (Aveyron, Gard, H6rault, Lozre) is the base of investigation, and one of its concerns was to record into a data-base names and surnames of all children born in between 1843 and 1862. Comparing this new-gained data-base with the already existing data-base INSERM in which names and surnames of children born in between 1890 and 1940 are collected, there was to be investigated, among other aims of research, what had been the migration behaviour of the population of the Central Massif, the C6vennes and the Low Languedoc from the middle of the 19th to the middle of the 20th centuries. Furthermore, by means of an analysis of the choosen names it was intended to proceed into history of mentality, in order to find out whether there had been different preferences in the choice of names between the catholic and the protestant population. For the period of 1843 and 1862 a total of 40,000 individuals have been recorded, while, due to the landflight and a decrease in birthrates, about 70,000 individuals have been recorded between 1890 and 1940.'
