(ICI2)... view less

'Aim of the project was an evaluation of the possibilities to reconstruct and critically document specific quantitative indicators for the phenomena of innovation and of the economic development of Germany between 1870 and today. While the indicators of innovation are supposed to demonstrate and measure the scope, the intensity and the structural interdependence of the process of innovation, the economic indicators are used to validate the indicators of innovation. With the help of the indicators it should be possible to theoretically follow the question about the relations between innovation and economic development on the basis of time series. In this the dynamics of the innovation process receives a special focus. After a short introduction the theoretic basis of historical time series and the relationship of innovation and economic development in Germany are briefly discussed. The main part focuses on specific groups of indicators that are used to determine the dynamics of the innovation process. These are general economic indicators, governmental spending for research and science, the building of human capital and the development in the field of inventions. The last case is treated in a more extensive way and the paper sheds light on the development in the area of patenting as well as a collection of innovative events that is gathered in a data-base set up by the IAB. Finally, the case of innovative action in the field of machinery industry in Germany is described. Two appendices hold figures of the used indicators and images of German machinery patents as example for their content.' (author's abstract)... view less
