"This paper explores the prospects and problems of a long-term analysis of political recruitment in several European countries, based on data provided by the DATA-CUBE project. Time series for France (Best, Graham), the Netherlands (Secker), Italy (Cotta, Mastropaolo) Verzichelli), Germany (Best, Hausmann, Schmitt) and Norway (Eliassen and Sjovaag) show a developmental pattern partly deviating, partly corresponding to basic hypotheses of political modernisation theory. The assumption that political modernisation, in terms of elite recruitment, fosters the stability of representative democraties is challenged." (author's abstract)... view less
